Tom Waterman
Stonemason, Waller, Natural Builder
Before training as a Stonemason Tom studied geography, studying our land and the way people use it, he has alway been interested in historical practices and has enjoyed working with archaeologists, and working out the ways a buildings use has changed over time, by examining its scars and different mortars.
Tom qualified as a stonemason from the Building Crafts College in 2009 and then was accepted onto the Princes’ Foundation for the Built Environment, Building Crafts Apprentice Scheme, where he had placements around the country at sites including; Buckingham Palace, Lincoln cathedral and the design and construction of a park shelter in rural Aberdeenshire
In this time Tom was lucky enough to meet King Charles III on numerous occasions, discussing stonemasonry practices, and assisting with fund raising for the (then) Princes Charities.
After this Tom worked on some of London’s most prestigious buildings, including the Ritz hotel, The V&A museum and the National Gallery. Whilst working in London Tom gained more experience of conservation and restoration practices. In 2012/13 Tom spent some time in New Zealand, building a large dry stone wall and working on Cargill’s monument in Dunedin.
Tom has been based in the West country since 2013, working across the south west on jobs in Wales, Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall. has been working here for the past 10 years, on a wide variety of prestigious projects including:
- National Trust
- Grand Design style projects
- Churches and Cathedrals
